Zepbound vs Mounjaro: Let’s Compare

by | News

In the evolving landscape of medical weight loss treatments, two names have recently captured the attention of both healthcare professionals and patients alike: Zepbound and Mounjaro.

As innovative solutions in the realm of weight loss medication, each offers promising benefits for various conditions, marking significant advancements in obesity treatment. However, with new treatments come questions regarding their efficacy, safety, side effects, dosages, and availability. Understanding any nuances between Zepbound and Mounjaro is crucial for individuals considering these options, as well as for those seeking to expand their knowledge of new medical treatments.

A study done in the US shows that over 80% of adults have a BMI that falls within the overweight or obese category, so having medications, like Zepbound and Mounjaro, available is a significant medical advancement in weight loss treatments.

Whether you are a patient contemplating either of these treatments, someone on one looking to switch to the other, or simply interested in the latest developments in medical weight loss, this comparison intends to equip you with a comprehensive understanding of both Zepbound and Mounjaro.

Understanding Zepbound and Mounjaro

Zepbound: is a prescription injectable medication designed to assist adults experiencing obesity or those who are overweight with associated medical conditions related to their weight in losing and maintaining weight loss. It is recommended that Zepbound be administered alongside a diet with reduced calorie intake and an uptick in physical exercise.

Mounjaro: is a prescription medication in injectable form, designed to enhance blood sugar (glucose) levels in adults with type 2 diabetes when used in conjunction with a proper diet and regular exercise.

In the simplest form, Zepbound of Mounjaro both have tirzepatide as the same active ingredient and work the same way, the main difference is in the labeling and indicated uses. As you can see above, Zepbound is approved for weight loss, and Mounjaro is FDA-approved for people with a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. But there are small differences that would matter to those looking to start the medication.

Mounjaro and Zepbound Side Effects

Common Side Effects of Mounjaro

Possible side effects of Mounjaro include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Indigestion
  • Stomach Pain

It is noted on the Mounjaro website that most of the symptoms occur when the dosage is increased, and overall, the symptoms tend to decrease over time.

Common Side Effects of Zepbound

The most common side effects of Zepbound include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Stomach (abdominal) pain
  • Indigestion
  • Injection site reactions
  • Feeling tired
  • Allergic reactions
  • Belching
  • Hair loss
  • Heartburn.

These are not all possible side effects for both Mounjaro and Zepbound. Mounjaro and Zepbound Dosage Comparison

Both Zepbound and Mounjaro have a similar dosing schedule. It is recommended by the company that the first time a person starts on tirzepatide, they begin with a 2.5 MG injection and continue that weekly for four weeks. Once they complete month one, they can increase their dosage to 5 MGs weekly for at least four more weeks.

If additional glycemic control is needed, there are other doses that can be taken in increasing increments:

  • 7.5 MG Once Weekly
  • 10 MG Once Weekly
  • 12.5 MG Once Weekly
  • 15 MG Once Weekly

It is important to note that it is not recommended to skip up in doses before a person has been on the previous dosage level for at least one month. Knowing when to move up or down in dosage for these types of medications can be tricky for some people and is dependent on many factors unique to each individual. This is something that your Weight Loss Doctor can help you with.

Is there a difference in how you take Zepbound vs Mounjaro?

Nope! We get asked a lot if Zepbound or Monunjaro are pills, and the answer is no.

They are both administered the same way, as an injectable. The great news is that it can be taken at home, and each prescription comes with four pens, which is enough for four weeks of medication (1 month in most cases).

Making the Choice Between Zepbound and Mounjaro

Since Zepbound and Mounjaro are so similar, the difference comes down to a few factors, all of which can be discussed with your doctor.

  1. What are you treating? If you are looking to take a GLP-1 medication for only weight loss vs if you are taking it for diabetes could change the doctor’s recommendation for the one that will be best for you.
  2. Is there one that your insurance will pay more for? Mounjaro, although on-label is used for diabetics, has been available for longer and is on the formulary for more insurance companies. Over time, however, that may change. If you are looking to treat obesity, you may be able to get Mounjaro approved by your insurance to use off-label until Zepbound is added.
  3. Is there one that is more available in your area? These types of medications have been plagued by nationwide shortages, so the availability of one over another may affect you.

Again, this is something that your doctor can help you with, and there are many more variables that may affect your treatment uniquely, so look for a provider with years of experience prescribing these medications and treating these diseases.
